Tagalog is the standard register of Filipino (Austronesian linguistic family, Malayo-Polynesian branch). It is the first language of 28 million people (or 33% of the population of the Philippines) and the second language of over 45 million speakers. It is also the official language of the country along with English. The word order in Tagalog is quite free, but the verb tends to take the first place. Reversal is however frequent.
The writing was brought to the country by Christian missionaries who naturally thought of the Latin alphabet. The first literary works were written in Spanish (late 16th century) or in Tagalog as textbooks for learning Spanish. Since the twentieth century, literature has been in English, Spanish and local languages.
